Very little is known about what predisposes a person to migraines, says Rzhetsky, but the mapping project reveals a strong correlation with autism. Rzhetsky’s research also shows correlations between infections (like the hepatitis B and meningococcus in this part of the map) and many neurological diseases, including migraines, autism, and schizophrenia. “There are theories about infectious origins of these diseases--they’re not popular, but they haven’t been disproved,” he says.
