The Making of a New Collider

On January 9, 2007, engineers carefully lowered one of the 11 pieces of the Compact Muon Solenoid, one of the Large Hadron Collider's main particle detectors. This piece weighs 1,270 metric tons and was lowered 90 meters from the ground to the bottom of the tunnel over the course of 11 hours and with mere centimeters of clearance.
